After a practical balance or equilibrium between the profane aspects of the outside world and a home sanctuary has been established, complementing the sacred space with a quiet space or nook set aside for a shine, seasonal altar, ancestor/family memorabilia, spiritual/religious images, candles, flowers, plants, art, water foundation, wind chime, fresh air, natural light, incense, sitting pillow, and other accouterments would be an added value.
Like a church, synagogue, temple, and other places of reverence, the aim of this space is to reflect the truth about life, which you hold dear. Also, to serve as a gentle reminder to practice these truths via customs, rituals, and traditions on a regular basis.
All the more reason why the travails of the world shouldn’t have access to the entire house, all of the time. Sweetness, beauty, and love are incompatible with the fears of the world. When and where fear enters, the joys and pleasures of earthly life will depart.
It may be impossible to exclude the world entirely in the modern era, but preparing an inner sanctum within the larger sacred space serves as a tangible reminder to maintain a proper equilibrium between the two, with the preponderance in favor of sanctuary and sacred space.
